Chit chat about android non-sense, either apps in the Google Play store or latest-greatest hardware:
I've been waiting forever for the Google Nexus 5 to drop and now that it's out, son, I am disappoint. Pros: It's awesome and cheap. Cons: Not available on Verizon and integrated battery.
So now the question is: do I switch carriers (I'm getting more and more fed up with Verizon anyway, especially since they boned me on my last trip to Utah) or do I just get a different phone? I'm considering the Galaxy Note 3 (I don't mind the largeness).

err it's a evolution of the Nexus 4 (well and the LG G and G2), why would it have had a non-integrated battery or work on Verizon?
With news of 4.4 not coming to the Galaxy Nexus I ordered a 5 yesterday, ships "by november 8th", I'm pretty excited.
edit - assuming it works with Verizon why don't you just get a HTC One and flash it to the google play version. Supposed to be the best android phone of last year and the google play edition is basically stock android.

I know they're all "bad" but I'm getting pretty sick of their shenanigans. Last time I was in Utah, on a routine trip that I make ever couple of months, I had no service the entire time, including all the places where I did before and in the "city". I'm tired of them adding their bloatware to the phones and stuff like that. "With news of 4.4 not coming to the Galaxy Nexus", what do you mean? I thought the Nexus 5 came with 4.4?

Samsung Galaxy Nexus < LG Nexus 4 < LG Nexus 5 Google announced yesterday that the Galaxy Nexus is not getting an upgrade from 4.3 to 4.4 as it falls outside their new "18 month window". More likely though it's that TI no longer makes ARM processors and did not want to keep updating the drivers in the old arm processor in the Galaxy Nexus for Google. Qualcomm makes the chipsets in the Nexus 4 and 5.

Oh, I see, I read "Galaxy Nexus" as "Google Nexus" for some reason. Reading Comprehension FTL.
At this point, I think I'm gonna buy a Nexus outright, and then signing up for Sprint without a contract on my line, but a contract on my wife's phone.

I pay $56 CDN for a unlimited nationwide calling plan + 2 gigs of data so $55 USD is pretty comparable. Seems like a pretty good deal based on what I've seen in the past, rates just seem to keep going up these days.
(I've never even been close to 2gigs in a months, free wifi almost everywhere I go seems like)

Are they just a subsidiary or something? In theory, I could use an outright purchased phone even on Verizon right? Or is it a different technology. I lost track around the time CDMA was phased out.

Unless you mean you can't buy it on subsidy for Verizon, in which case I misunderstood your original post (although I don't know why you'd ever buy a subsidized nexus device and then be locked into a expensive contract when the phone is only $350). But ya, literally does not work on Verizon.

Normally, I'd buy in on subsidy from Verizon (because I'm a cheap ass), but they don't offer it, because it hasn't passed their "inspection" or whatever. But not fully understanding the industry, I didn't know if that meant it was just a "Hey we don't sell these" vs. a "Hey, this phone won't physically work on our network."

If you're gonna switch to ATT and do a regular contract + subsidized phone I don't know if I'd get a Nexus just cause they are so cheap. The idea with Nexus is you are getting an amazing phone for half price and you can then take that to any big company and get a cheaper monthly plan.

No you can't just buy the Nexus 5 and use it on Verizon. Hell the nexus 7 tablet won't be activated by Verizon and the bands support it. bgr.com/2013/09/18/verizon-net-neutrality-controversy-nexus-7/2GBs data seems like a lot till you use a 4g device on Verizon. My usage from a 3g device to a 4g device went up a lot doing a lot of the same actions. 4g will pull down higher quality music from streaming sites etc. I have to monitor my usage and it sucks. I was watching a football game at the dog park one Saturday morning and 10 minutes later I got a message that I had used 50% of my data for the month. Awesome!

I have 2GB (sometimes 4GB) of data and never go over 600MB, and I update most of my apps over data at work. I live in a really really good 4G area too.

Ya streaming video will kill you, I don't ever really do that though so I've never had a problem with a 2gig cap.

Got my Google Nexus 5 last night. Getting new service with AIO (thanks Raspy, for the heads up) on Friday. I'm so psyched, the phone is so awesome compared to my old piece of shit.

If my phone wasn't work provided I wouldn't have a Verizon phone. Best service around but fuck the high prices

If my phone wasn't work provided I wouldn't have a Verizon phone. Best service around but fuck the high prices I'd found that their service started to lack severely. Dropped calls all the time and more dead spots than there used to be. AT&T prolly won't be any better, but man I'm done with Verizon. Fuck those guys.

If that was the case you should have reported it. They have a hotline for that shit and will ping the towers to see what's going on

They have a hotline for that shit and will ping the towers to see what's going on I did, they told me they would look into it and call or email me back. Never got either and when I went back a few weeks later it was still not working right. I've had to contact their customer support because my company has about a dozen cell modems through Verizon and sometimes we lose signal. Whenever they open a ticket they always promise to call or email me the results and they never have. I've deal with their customer support about 2-3 times a month and while their customer service is generally pretty decent (up and down, depending on who you talk to, like any average support company) at the time, their follow through is abysmal.

New phone is super sexy. Aio is pretty sweet too, fast friendly help, easy to manage payment options and so far, good signal everywhere I want to be. This morning was the first time I played Pandora on my commute and it didn't randomly skip to the next song or totally crap out.
So, on the Aio site, they say that call forwarding is part of the service, but how do you make it work? I'm sure there's some special number you have to dial, but I couldn't find anything about it on their site.

Are you talking about the hot spots? I am curious which ones you had. They haven't been worth a damn for awhile. I kept my 3g one until it died this past year and switched to a jetpack, the previous 4g modems were hot trash. That signal lost happens on the handoff between 3g and 4g. It couldn't pick it back up. Issue has finally been fixed on newest jetpack

Issue has finally been fixed on newest jetpack No, these were hard-mounted modems (some of them only doing serial comms) that had a static IP and an external yagi antenna. They allowed us to talk to devices out in the field, so people didn't have to drive the 2 hours each way to get data. So, I'd call them, because this was a customer facing issue and open trouble tickets, and the would start the process, but never, ever get back to me about the root cause or that it was supposed to be working again. We just had to spam it all day, every day until it came back online. Sometimes we had to open multiple tickets because nothing would get fixed and they would never tell us what was going on.
