I beat Ryse single player this weekend. The story was better than I expected. Definitely some epic moments. And the game is so so pretty all the way through.
Going from Assassin's Creed 4 earlier in the day to this made me realize how soft AC4 had made me. They use a very similar combat system with the countering of attacks... but AC4 gives you the little on screen icons to let you know when an attack is incoming. Ryse... you just gotta watch them and react. This led to me being pummeled for a couple minutes until I got back up to speed. The ballista sections all universally aren't much fun... just like they aren't much fun in any other of these action games. Stop with this shit developers! The main combat sections, bosses and the shield wall sections are all fun. The shield wall stuff is super easy, but the graphics and sound of the game make it an entertaining and welcome break to defending in a multi-man melee.
The later enemies in the game are a bit annoying. They require "perfect" timing by the games standards to counter. I have all but I think 5 of the unlocks for my character. I poked at doing an act on legendary since there are achievements for it... and I still need a few unlocks. I'll be able to get a few stages this way without dying but there is no way I'll have the patience to do the whole game. You can't take many hits in legendary and the health regen options are very slim. I will die in the later stages. Getting the achievements is doable with all the checkpointing the game does but no thanks probably. The same as no thanks to any previous CoD game's top difficulty achievements as well.
Tremor and I had a chance to poke at the Gladiator multiplayer 2 player co-op stuff. Had a ton of fun. I will have to remember to record next time as I've learned how to do that now. Team work is handy for the selection of which god your guy patrons... and when to use your super abilities. Someone should be Apollo (health regen on executions and a slow mo focus). Tremor had been Mars (damage bonus on executions and an AoE damage focus). When in slow mo, both players get an ability we referred to as mega-kick. Sends enemies flying back 15 feet. This can be a hell of a thing with the number of spikey things and pits available in the environments. Big bad boss? Dodgey little annoying 2 sword barbarian? Slo mo, mega kick, spikes, problem solved.
